There is no real answer to this question, and there is still allot of the debate about this. The definition of mathematics has been changing for hundreds of years, and so has the definition of a mathematician.
For a physicist, or any applied mathematician, mathematics is more of a science, more precisely the language in which they can do their science.
For a pure mathematician, math is more like an art. Pure mathematician don't care about the application of the math.They do it purely because of the pleasure they get from doing math, and find it very beautiful.
I would say that mathematics are abstract art. You find all the parts, then paint all the answers. The part of the reasons that math is abstract because we do not even know what the numbers actually look like.
