When they are initially put on the do hurt quite a bit.. Get Beeswax (can be found in any crafts department in the sewing supplies) to help with the scratchy feeling on the metal against the inside of your lips... A small amount of wax applied to the bracket will ease the scratching...
You will also inevitably get a small blister on the tip of your tongue from fiddling with the braces as you get used to them... Oragel (or similar product) will help with that as you get used to them... A small amount on the blister will ease the irritation... After you get used to the braces the wax and Oragel will be a thing of the past
Then they will be uncomfortable for a day or so at each tightening, not so much pain as pressure.. I found eating something cold numbed the feeling as did a little Oragel especially at night when I was trying to get to sleep...
Having braces is more uncomfortable than painful but well worth the end result...
Invest in a Water-pick it is a lifesaver when it comes to getting out the food particles that get stuck in the braces...
For the first few hours you can't even feel them, they just feel kind of strange. I was stupid and tried to eat solid food on the first day. Don't do that. Then later that night, they hurt like crazy. I couldn't sleep at all, so look for a night-time pain reliever. They'll be incredibly sore for about 2 weeks, during those 2 weeks eat only applesauce, soup, smoothies, and ice cream. Also, your mouth will get very cut up- use wax for that. Eventually you will have to stop using wax, because your mouth will be calloused in the spots where the wire irritates you. Good luck, you're going to need it.
The first time they put them on it hurts some, but I am a strong person. When you get them tightened people say it hurts badly, I still have mine, but they don't hurt me at all. Plus, I've gone through A LOT of more serious pain and I'm getting my wisdom teeth and molars (without full roots) taken out. You'll be fine. TAKE ADVIL OR SOMETHING BEFORE!!!! AND AFTER!!!!
They don't hurt when you have them put on, but that night and the next two days or so they are very sore. Use orajel! They are little q-tips with medicine inside. you can't use them very often, but you just put the medicine where it hurts. They will help. Don't worry.
Also, it takes some getting used to before you can eat normal food without it feeling very weird.
They hurt for the first couple of days when they tighten it and then after that you get use to it. It is just for couple of days when they tighten it since it pressure the teeth to move and become straighten. It is not something that does not go away with pain killers. Don't worry, you would have a beautiful smile after that.
When i got my braces on they said to take Motrin every 4 hours, it helped a lot and they hurt when they put them on for a few days and when they put on a power wire!
Ohmygosh, when I got mine put on about 6 months ago, they killed me, but dont worry, they only hurt for about 3 or 4 days, then you cant even feel them, though getting food stuck in them is very annoying.
I recommend getting a pick for you teech from the store, and also taking it to school/work.
