I have had acne since I was about 13 years old, and 6 years later, I still do. Proactiv doesn't work for me. My doctors have prescribed Retin A which worked pretty well, and some kind of gel that did the same for a while. I mean....I don't have excessive acne and I'm not one of those people that allow blemishes to ruin my self-esteem, but I would really like my skin to be pretty again as it was before I hit puberty.
For the record, though I'm not sure if acne is hereditary or not, neither my mother or my father had it. I know the importance of clean skin, so I wash my face at least four times daily.

It's really great that you are thinking about healing your scars, and most importantly you want to do things now to prevent them. Your acne is hormonal so you need to approach it from the inside and the outside. Retin-A is great because it increases skin turnover - helping to increase the rate of skin healing where there are left over marks from old blemishes and it helps to prevent new blemishes to occur. There is another product that is a novel formulation using Clindamyacin (topical antibiotic) and Benzoyal Peroxide called "Acanya" Your skin will clear up in about 2 weeks with this combined with the Retin-A. Make sure to use a good quality moisturizer for acne-prone skin because the Retin-A and the other products can be drying. For the inside, balancing your hormones is key or you will always be fighting blemishes from the outside. I recommend taking the birth control pill if you are comfortable with that - it is #1 in helping with hormonal acne. Lots of teenagers take it for this reason, even if they are not sexual active so don't worry about that. If you don't want to take hormones, there is another medication called Spironolactone that deals with hormonal acne. Works like a charm. If you prefer a natural approach - 30-60mg of zinc daily will help a lot. Also, if you get a vitamin-C product like Dermal "Ester-C Serum with Vitamin E" - which you can get from drugstore.com. This is a topical product that you can use with your other products that will accelerate the healing process because it stimulate collagen production. You notice improvements the next day. I know it seems like a lot of information, but once you get a treatment protocol set, it will seem like clockwork, you will have beautiful skin, and will have prevented scarring that will annoy you as an adult :-) Feel free to email me if you have any questions.
Now to deal with acne scarring, I would hold on the chemical peels because you are using retin-A. You have to wait many months after using retin-A before you can have a chemical peel because it takes too much off the surface of the skin and can be damaging. If you just have surface marks from old blemishes (discoloration), do the outside/inside treatment I recommend and they will heal on their own. If you have some deeper scars where there are indents, I would recommend talking in more detail with your dermatologist about your options. Chemical peels might help some, but there are a lot of new options out there that work a lot better - especially laser treatments.

Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.
In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.
Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.
In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.
If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

RE:
Do chemical peels fade acne scars?

I have a question for u. Is it popable zots or are they hard blemishes under the skin? I have cystic acne which nothing helps get rid of it besides antibiotics. But a chemical peel will demish scaring. It can take up to 20 sessions but works. Good luck
