Here is the correct answer with a reference so you can read the law for yourselves. Passports will not be needed for land travel to and from Canada until June 2009. Right now you need a photo I.D. and birth certificate. Beginning next June, you will need a passport to enter Canada by all means of transportation.
Naturalized American citizens do not require a passport to enter Canada. Photo ID and a birth certificate will be sufficient. And returning to the USA will be no problem if you are driving. If you are flying on a US carrier a passport may be required.
Travelling from Canada to the USA in the near future will, however, require a passport. And if your flying on a US airline a passport is required.
All you have to remember is that it is US Customs and Immigration that is paranoid. We Canadians are a little more laid back.
Until June 1, 2009, you do not need to have a passport for a land crossing between the USA and Canada. On that date, a passport will be required. Since January, nothing less than a valid driver's license and a certified birth certificate copy (or the original) is required. If you don't have that paperwork, it is very likely that you will not be able to enter Canada.
If and when Obama wins in November do not be surprised if this June 1st 2009 policy will be reversed. Remember that all of the hijackers on 9/11 were in the U.S. legally with their Saudi or Egyptian passports so bringing in this policy almost 8 years thereafter is a pointless waste of time and will only hurt the U.S. economy even further.
You don't need a passport (until June 2009) if you travel by land and/or sea (you need a government issued photo ID i.e driver's license and your "original" birth certificate)
Yes, it is now required for Americans to hold passports when traveling to Canada and Mexico. I wonder how that will work when the North American Union is formed with them.
its not yet obligatory but if you do have one bring it. u can get into canada without a passport. i lived in buffalo, ny which is right on border northeast
Yes. I believe a passport is needed. If not yet then it will be in January. Precautions I suppose. Better off getting one either way.
