My dog tore the ligament in his right knee and had to get surgery on it four days ago. They prescribed us tramadol for the pain. One tablet every eight hours. On the second night of his surgery, he was panting a lot after taking Tramadol. I called the vet and they said to give him another tramadol in an hour and if he's still panting in two hours then to take him to the vet. An hour after giving it to him, he did fine and went to sleep. Now, it's the fourth night and he's panting again after the Tramadol. Is this normal? I just want to know if the Tramadol is making my dog pant this much. It's ridiculous how much he is panting.

Tramadol doesn't usually make a dog pant, but pain does. My guess is that by the time you give him one, the last one has worn off and he's in pain again until the latest pill takes effect. But I don't know why you wouldn't call your vet and ask what to do. Maybe you need a different dosage or to give the Tramadol more often.
Dogs pant when they're in pain, he might need a higher dosage. Call again
Then if you "just want to know" contact your vet again, phone calls are free in most areas.
Don't trust your vet then get a second opinion from another vet, not from strangers/children on YA.
Dogs like people are individuals and may or may not react, in varying degrees.
I had to use this, once, with one of my bitches who had terminal cancer. It made her so 'off' that I phoned my vet and told him I was taking her off it. He prescribed other pain relief.
Panting would be a sign of pain but if the Tram. was working, there should be no pain.
My only advice would be to get back to your vet (phone) and tell him what's going on.

Thinking more about this, what's going on could be that the opiates in this product are 'spacing him out' as happened with my b itch, and he doesn't like the feeling of not being in complete control of his faculties. As said, I'd talk to your vet about prescribing an alternative pain med.
