I always thought, that in a democracy, the majority was supposed to rule. Well, in the 2010 election, 1/150 members went with a promise of introducing a carbon tax. 144/150 went with a promise of NOT introducing one. I am not sure about the other 5, but I doubt that they did. Yet, we are being hit with the world's largest carbon tax, by this lying, deceitful and corrupt, incompetent and inept government, in three just three months now. Australia may be a democracy in that we have the right to vote, but in all other aspects, it's a dictatorship. Most Australians don't want a carbon tax, and most Australians voted against it.

Yes well the majority of us didn't' want the GST or for our troops to go to Iraq but hey that happened
That's what leaders do they lead and make unpopular decisions then we get to vote them out like we did Howard that's why its classed as a democracy.
You had your turn with Julia and you will get another chance so best pick a decent leader this time and Liberal will be in like Flynn.
Aussie I never voted for the GST or the Iraq war but we got them and Howard deceived us over both of them.
Also you would be battling to find to one small business that agreed with it and the Iraq war was illegal.

All politicians lie but only one was called Honest John.
Now whats was that about the Iraq war was not being about oil and how many Australian troops died for it.

RE:
How is Australia a democracy?
I always thought, that in a democracy, the majority was supposed to rule. Well, in the 2010 election, 1/150 members went with a promise of introducing a carbon tax. 144/150 went with a promise of NOT introducing one. Honestly, how many Australians do you know who could get up and give a 5 minute uninterrupted speech on what their preferred political candidate stands for? How many do you reckon? Could you for instance explain your candidates stance on gay marriage/gay adoption, euthanasia, immigration, abortion/right to life, the one sidedness of the Family Law Act, tougher penalties for crime yada yada yada. You can't drive a car without knowing the rules of the road, why should people be allowed to vote when they haven't got a clue who or what they're voting for? Both sides of politics know they have, for whatever reason, a hardcore base so come election time what they do is ''buy'' with a bit of pork barrelling, the minorities, swing voters and fringe dwellers. Some people would argue that that is true democracy at work, I however, beg to differ.
Some people conveniently forget Howard went to an election stating he intended to bring in a GST.
Didn't see Labor rushing to drag Aussie troops out of Iraq or Afghanistan when they got in.
The Carbon Tax will not make one iota of a difference here in Australia other than raise prices, more money for the 'bludgers' and loony left [both from the same mould] and the rest is going to be put in some obscure fund of the crackpots at the UN.
Now Swan is going to have to make savings bet no one gets hit but the average workers of Australia
Did the average elector elect Labor and the Greens to borrow $100m a day, of course not but it will be a debt that the next government will have to pay back as usual.
Haven't considered this question in depth, but *shock, horror* I actually agree with Aussie's EDITS in regard to Molly's answer on this occasion. Aussie is an old biddy, but she is correct in that Howard let the public vote on the GST as Liberal policy (aka introduced PRIOR to the election), which is not what Gillard has done with the carbon tax (aka flat out LIED to the electorate).
Anyway, I might edit and answer more thoroughly later.
well, for years and years australians got what they voted for, which is not to good. i hoped that would chance a little when rudd got elected, but alas, he wasn´t strong enough.
Matt , I agree with your sentiments about this government...I've been watching Julia's press conference which is running on the ABC live at the moment ..The lying , deceptive cow has run up here to try to stick her finger in the dyke before she disappears under a flood of public anger .
Having said that , you're wrong on one point as far as the last Federal Election was concerned .....we didn't vote for or against the carbon tax ...Joolia stated emphatically that there would be no carbon tax so it wasn't even on the agenda !
The fact that she is up here meeting with our new Premier is a sign that she knows she's a dead woman walking & is desperately trying to make a show of caring about how Queenslanders feel....
As the carbon tax bites into our pockets people will realise only too well who introduced it & deal with her in the same way we dealt with that other incompetent rabble last weekend !
edit @ Molly..We had a chance to vote against the GST ...Howard clearly stated his intention to introduce one PRIOR to the election ....as for the decision to support sending soldiers to Iraq , matters relating to military decisions are NEVER voted on at elections but voters clearly can make their feelings known after these decisions are taken.
This PM lied to the Australian people...she didn't just think one day she wouldn't do it & change her mind a few days later ...she KNEW she would have to introduce it if she was to stay in her job..she had a precommitment with Bob Brown !
Matt, you're right.
Australians treat politics like football. One side is labor and one side is liberal. There's no difference between the two really, but Australian's can't get past the footy mentality.
In a couple of years time, it will be the liberals introducing a COMMIE tax and everyone will be whinging about how bad Abbott is. So what will Australians do? Vote for Labor again. AND THE CYCLE CONTINUES AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.
Australia is a dictatorship shared amongst the twins of labor and liberal.
Australians seem to think that because the liberal actors are opposing the tax that they wouldn't introduce it if they'd been the team chosen to enact it.
In two years time, liberals tax tax tax tax, then in a few more years, labor tax tax tax tax tax tax tax, then liberals tax tax tax tax tax tax tax tax tax tax, then labor tax tax tax tax tax tax.
I think Australians are actually starting to like taxes, soviet russia would be proud.
Y'all know what I think about Jooliar and her tax.I can't wait to see that lying cow out on her ear.I will party for 6 months.
Howard was the master of lies.
I might not like Julia but she has long to go before she tells as many porky pies as him.
Just go ask Pauline Hanson.
