Racism may lead to cultural insensitivity, because if you believe in superiority of your own race (and culture), then you won’t feel any care about other culture, no matter how good they are. However, the reverse is not necessarily true. You can be culturally insensitive but not racist. This situation unfortunately exists in North America. People might not be racist, but have no feeling or interest about other cultures.
IT ISN'T. Maybe it can be "considered" part of it, IF YOU ARE A RACIST (not a modern day anthropologist, unless you want to fall into disrepute with the rest of your colleagues). There was a time between the death of Boaz and Margaret Mead's popularity where cultural anthropology was rather racist, and before Boaz, it was composed of contempt and discussions about "races", i.e. Carleton S Coon. Modern anthropology, however, is not part of this. Racism is pure ignorance. That is why the number of neo Nazi academics in the 21st century can probably be counted on one hand. Racism is not cultural anthropology, which studies cultures and sometimes ethnicities, which are two completely separate ideas from race. As for "survivalism" and "survival of the fittest", it was a conservative mis-appropriation of Darwin's research to social relations, which was used to justify racism and centuries of injustice. However, "social Darwinism" is rarely accepted amongst cultural anthropologists. The answer above mentioning the "downside" of racism neglects to mention what the "good side" of racism is. This is because there isn't any. It is the same as saying the "good side of ignorance and social idiocy". There is no such moral concept.
One ex-acquaintance I knew in high school called me the N word.
Once I explained to her what it meant and how much it hurt me she still refused to stop using the word because she felt her first amendment freedoms were violated.
So I just stop hanging around her.
In my opinion she is being racist and she used the first amendment as a reason to rant.
