Exercises as example are very effective ways to treat TMJ at home. Use special exercises that help relax the TMJ as well as set it to proper alignment. You may also control your food such as:
- Diet. A certain foods keep your bones healthy while others can cause damage (especially foods that increase acid levels).
- Avoid foods that contain: lots of sugar, yeast, preservatives and chocolate, alcohol, black tea and coffee as well. This condition is also particular because you can actually benefit from adding more fat to your diet.
- Eating more vegetables and fruits is always a good idea as well.
I have this. Go to see a dentist, they can fit a splint, it they don't mention it ask for one (don't be embarrassed to sort of self prescribe) You wear the splint at night and it stops grinding and clamping of the jaw which lessons you day time symptoms. Also go to see a doctor, very low doses of tricycalic anti depressants help such as Amitriptlyne (for example 10-25mg at night). Both these things helped me. Also strong prescription anti-inflamitorys with ibuprofen will help (ask your doctor). Co-codamol (over the counter) can take the pain away or ask for stronger version from your doctor, but be really careful with this as they are incredibly addictive and should only be taken if Absolutely necessary! Also i know this will sound strange but if you are finding it difficult and painful to chew, chew on the side that is hurting, this reduces the pain, sound odd but it really works, something to do with the way your jaw is structured. If you do all this you should be able to control your symptoms, this wont go away but if you are persistent with treatment you can significantly reduce the pain and discomfort. A little advise for dealing with doctors and dentists: from my experience with this, doctors in particular tend to be rather dismissive of this condition, it took me about 5 visits before anything was done, if i were you i would write down all you symptoms and how much it hourts and exactly how much it effects your daily life! i always got the feeling that they thought i was making a fuss and they didn't really get how much it can hurt and how irritating it is and how it acutely does effect a lot of stuff! be persistent with doctors and suggest the treatment that has worked for me! Good luck, xCx
