He explored past the tip of Africa and went farther than Bartholomeu Dias there he met an Arab pilot who helped him ccomplish his goal of finding a quicker way to China's trading posts than taking the long 3 year journey on the silk road which Marco Polo wrote about after returninf to his hometown of Venice which inspired Europeans to learn about china. Basically: He wanted a quicker way to Chinas trading posts
