remove acrylic nails?
I got tips on about a month ago and haven't had the time to go get them refilled. I would like to get rid of them now and am not sure how to.
I would like to do it at home rather then go back to the salon.
I have heard that soaking your nails in nail polish remover works but then you have to paint them right away so your real nail doesn't fall off. is this true?

To add to RachelN, please make sure that you are using your acetone based product in a very well ventilated area so that you do not become nauseated or light headed. Be very gentle when trying to remove the artificial nail. You natural nails will be thinner where the acrylic was applied due to the buffing off of layers of nail in order to get the acrylics to adhere to the nail. The damage to the nail from acrylics is partially due to the buffing off of the layers of natural nail, and the exposure of the cuticle to the extreme chemicals used for artificial nails. After you remove the nails, you should moisturize regularly and use cuticle or nail oil daily. So many answers saying to use nail polish remover. Well, thats only partially true. If you use the non-acetone type, then you can soak them all day and nothing is going to happen.
You need either polish remover WITH acetone, or preferably, pure acetone to remove acrylic nails. Hot water does not work, BTW.
And remember, acetone is acetone. It doesn't matter if it is sold for use on nails, or if it came from the hardware store. It is the same thing. So, get yourself some pure acetone, and soak them in that. Be patient though. It will take about 20-30 minutes of soaking before the acrylic is soft enpugh to remove. Do not pry it off as suggested. This is not how its done. Just soak them long enough, and it will dissolve by itself. You can use an orange stick to gently scrape the acrylic off once it has gotten very soft, but not until then.
Others say all the time that their nails are always so thin and fragile after removing the acrylic, and blame it on that.
That is not true. It is a bad tech who ruins your nails, not the acrylic.
The best way I know how is to get 100% acetone polish remover and soak your nails. It'll take quite awhile for them to disolve but it's much easier than heading back to the salon. I don't think your real nails will 'fall off', but they will be weak, I keep clear polish on mine all the time anyway so it probably wouldn't be a bad idea.
Yes, nail polish remover (acetone based) does remove the fake nail. And under the acrylic, your nail is EXTREMELY weak and thin and brittle and it would be either a good idea to paint them, or cut them really short and start growing them from scratch.

Yes the nail polish remover works and hot water also works remember to pull them a little so they can come off.No your natural nails wont fall off.
soak them in nail polish remover, its what i used to do when i wanted mine off..
and your nail wont really like fall off.

have patience. they will come off naturally and it won't take that long. you can pick at them to help but don't hurt yourself. i never tried to use anything to get mine off; i just waited for them to come off. if you are in a hurry, then i hope another answerer can help you better. and no, your real nail is not going to fall off.
