dont forget him and Cheney came up with that energy bill in 2005 that gave the oil companies 6 billion in tax credits
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/06/09/politics/f...
theres a CBS story on it.
Mccain opposed the bill because the oil companies dont need anymore money to play with.
read the story.
But yet obama swears he is against tax breaks for oil companies! LOL
He was CoSponsor on Cheneys bill!!!
1) Let me just ask - have you actually done the math for your own particular situation, to see how much a gas tax holiday would save you? I did the math for my own situation, and it wouldn't really save me too much.
2) I honestly don't know the answer here, but...what all besides road maintenance does the gas tax pay for? If we take a gas tax holiday, does that mean they won't be able to fund fixing potholes?
3) Drilling...the surveyors agree that under the gulf is about as much oil as the US uses in 6 months. Obviously if we drill and refine that into gasoline, they're not just going to give it to us free. They'll sell it to us - maybe at a cheaper price than what OPEC will sell to us for, but not like 50% off or anything like that. I'd guess 10% off at the most, but that's just a guess. My household spends about $550/month on gas (I live far from work). So in 6 months, that's $3300. If it's 10% off, for those 6 months, that means I'll save a total of $330 from drilling. Now sure, I'd be happy if somebody came along and put an extra $330 in my pocket, but I'm not going to fool myself and say it's going to change my life in any meaningful way.
It seems to me like the better thing to do would be to get a car that gets 10% better gas mileage, since that will last more than 6 months.
There is nothing either candidate can promise that will significantly affect gas prices in the short term. A gas tax holiday will only mean that the money collected to maintain our roads will have to come from somewhere else or we let our infrastructure decline some more. There are no quick fixes for this problem. In my view, Obama has the best long term plan for the problem, but others thing the Reps have the right long term plan. Either way, don't get your hopes up for significantly lower gas prices soon.
Drilling isn't going to get us that far..there's only and expected 18 Billion Barrels of oil if we do off shore drilling, the US is expected to consume 7.45 Billion barrels of oil this year...so obviously the offshore drilling won't get us but maybe 3 yrs. and it's going to take atleast 5 years+ to get it out, it's not the solution to the problem. Our demand for oil is too high. We need an alternative solution, yes keep drilling for oil because we need it, but also put money into funding better alternatives. McCain isn't going to do anything but keep drilling...and probably try to take it from Iran...How does McCain understand..he's rich, if gasoline goes up it won't bother him.

Actually, he is for developing the technology, even if he is not for the drilling. I think he needs to incorporate the drilling while waiting for the technology, aswell as waiting for the technology to become affordable. We already have the Hybrid (Toyota, I believe?), but they are too expensive for many Americans (including myself who can only afford buying late-model used). I hear everybody hollering about developing the technology as the answer, and it is, but only in part, because they forget the affordability factor.
Whoever gets in office is going to raise our taxes because Bush f-up. I wish one of you neocons will admit Bush was in bed with Osama bin Laden. That why oil was so low when she ran for president. The solution is to use alternation mean for oils not drilling. McCain is just pandering to get votes.

You keep forgetting that Senator Obama is thinking of the long haul not pandering for quick fixes to get votes. Have you also forgotten that we are in this messed because of an Republican president name, Bush? We waste eight year with Bush. We are worst off instead of better. Obama is right, if we start drilling now for oil, we won't see that it in the market for 22 years or more. We are kidding ourselves if we think we can drill our way of these problems. We need to invents in alternative forms of energy, and the American auto makers need to produce autos that utilize new technologies. America has been lazy gluttons for too long. It's time we use our resource to rid ourselves of our dependence of oil. ><
Gas tax holliday can't help us at all, it would hurt us severly in the long run, every economist in the country agrees with that.
Drilling wont help much, and it wont help anything for several years.
Investing into the R&D of alternative technologies can produce results, bandaide fixes don't.
McCain is pandering to people like you who want instant solutions. There are none.
A gas tax holiday just makes the problem worse -- we continue to buy gas-guzzling SUVs and drive everywhere.
McCain was against offshore drilling before, then flip-flopped to cater to people like you. Experts in the oil industry know better -- the industry in the US has decimated its exploration and drilling capability because of the low prices from several years ago. They simply don't have the capacity to drill like they used to.
There is nothing anyone can do right NOW even Mc Cain
The gas hoiday is a farce and election ploy
He wants to drill BUT only in areas ALREADY assigned
He has a detailed plan if one wants to read it and best way to get your answer by going to his site
