Because all they see when they are watching CNN or any other news is the bad part about the country. It would not be news if they where talking about all the good things in Africa. Who wants to watch or hear about the GOOD (normanl) things that go on in Africa.

Compared to America, Africa is very poor. But then again, so are most countries outside of western Europe and Japan.

In response to your points:

1) Yes, Africa is rich in minerals. In today's economy, however, educated people's time is what commands top dollar. Africa has some of the lowest literacy rates in the world, not to speak of college education.

2) Soda purchases are not generally a measure of economic vitality. Even so, it is curious that you report Africa's soda sales eclipsing Asia's. This could be in part due to China's economic policies discouraging free trade.

3) Cell phones are necessary in Africa because of a lack of stable infrastructure. Therefore, this is an indicator of poverty and economic and political instability.

I spent some time in Egypt and saw that that country has the gamet - very rich and very poor - as do a lot of countries. Probably the reason that most Americans don't think of Africa having wealthy (or what we would thik of as middle class) areas is because we - as a people - are only exposed to certain aspects.

1) Raw material are cheap, relative to labor.

2) American poor drink Coca Cola. American rich drink bottle water, prefereably from Europe.

3) Cell phones are needed in Africa, because of lack of land lines.

The questin is do their cell phones has mp3 players and blue tooth ready.

All you see on T.V. is people dieing, famine,even Opera has sad stories about people in Africa.

Recently in the news though they were saying that the African people are getting to FAT. Hows that one for you
