Because 2012 is an election year and both sides want to come out looking good. Fact is they have raised the debt ceiling for the last 6 years and it needs to stop at some point. Forget the scare tactics you are hearing, the check will still rollout, seniors will get their checks, the military will get their checks and we will not default. It is all bull, it can happen but it won't, they will pass short term extensions until they figure it out. This has happened before and they always say no SS checks so old people will starve and no military pay for soldiers, again all bull. They like to use scare tactics to get their point across, man the people in other countries must be having a good laugh at all this bull that they feed the people and the ones that really believe it. If they could they would be telling you school children would have to stay home and lose out on an education. They love using seniors and children as scare tactics.
The only way we would "default" on anything is if Obama and Congress allows such a thing to happen. The only way Grandma won't get her Social Security is if Obama and Congress allows that to happen. We have plenty of revenue coming in to pay for the essentials, including the interest payments on our debt so that we don't default. We just won't have money to throw at discretionary spending. Our politicians will have to make some tough spending cuts that will affect their political lives and that's what they are worried about. Tough crap.
Borrowing more money to accumulate even more debt is not appealing to me at all.

We take in Plenty of money to pay the debt. And to pay the Military and Social security. All of which are mandated by law to get paid first.
What we will NOT have the money for is more Turtle Tunnels under Rural Highways, More build-ups of the IRS, the EPA, and OSHA. Or free condom programs, or The latest edition of "Susie has Two Mommies" for your second grade required reading or any of these other left-wing Whackadoodle wish list items nobody talks about.
Because the Repubs want to keep running him through the ringer on this over and over when in the past, the debt ceiling was just raised. Remember the bold statement by Mitch McConnell: "Our #1 goal is to ensure President Obama is a one-term president.” Given that statement, they seek in any possible way -- even playing games with the economy -- to make him fail, and anything short-term is part of that master plan. I don't blame him one bit. It is the job of Congress to raise the debt ceiling, not that of the president. They need to do their f**king job and stop playing games!
Political move straight out of the Bill Clinton play book. Let the government shut down and then use it as campaign ammo to blame the mean old Republicans for making that happen.
If the Republicans were smart, they would tell the American People that they are going to give in to Obama's demands.
Thus far, all of his policies have proven to be failures. Giving him what he wants will lead to even more failure and will ultimately result in a total loss of confidence and possibly the end of the Democratic Party.
We only have 18 more months and then we can have the Presidency, the House and the Senate for years to come and should be able to fix all of Obama's mistakes.
so that the GOP can continue to play games with the validity of the debt accrued by the United States? this needs to be settled, now. Obama will not trade the dismantling of our civil society and civic infrastructures for a debt ceiling hike...

He only wants to spend us deeper into debt before the 2012 elections. Makes his voters happy on the backs of working folks.
He can't sign what he doesn't get.
And its the job of the House to get it out to get Senate approval, and THEN it can go to Obama.
If the House can't write a bill that has a hope of getting Senate approval then it needs to work on it so it will.
