I used to be Catholic, and no, they don't ever say that. To me and those I knew growing up, that word was only used by what we considered the religious nuts who also danced around with snakes, babbled incoherently (spoke in tongues), and loudly, obnoxiously, praised Jesus at every turn. Now that I'm older and wiser, I consider the Catholics to be just as nutty, but in a different way ;-) Actually, that isn't true, the Catholics consider faith more a private issue and generally keep it to themselves instead of annoying others with their views. That's actually cool.
Characteristics of a Christian? Are not acting like Christ, lying, adultery, and generally immoral policies here and abroad on the list of christian characteristics?
In America it is morally just to allow someone to self-identify with a faith or a lack of one. We respect the faith that he has verbally aligned with. A lot of self-identified Christians do not exemplify Christian characteristics, so I would suggest not basing your assumptions of mere "characteristics".
I can say I am a hot dog all day long, it doesn't make me a hot dog. It might me me delusional, but not a hot dog.
He wouldn't know a true Christian it one walked up and sang the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" to him. You do kind of have to wonder what the Secret Service agents with him that day would do in that situation though.

Well, if we're going by that criterion, the number of non-Christian Christians would stagger the imagination.
And, although I can't be sure, I am tolerably sure that God doesn't vote Republican.
Cheers.

Obama acts more Christian than ninety percent of those on this site that claim to be Christian.
Half of you so-called Christians wouldn't know a real one even if he descended from heaven.
To be a Christian is to live like Christ which means not to judge or denigrate people but to be tolerant to others who are different.
Now that doesn't sound like Republican trait to me.
You are judging him. I guess you aren't a Christian either.
douchebag
really what characteristics would those be?
Something tells me you would actually have to read a Bible to figure that out.
He acts more Christian than any republican figure. All they do is lie, spread hate and obsess about money.
