Apex DVD Video Player AD-500W issue?

A few months ago my Apex AD-500W DVD player was playing a DVD and suddenly the movie stopped playing and the screen went black about 15 minutes into the movie. Then, the blue DVD screen came back on the tv and it started to play the movie again from the beginning. (The cable was out, so I decided to watch a movie.) About 5 minutes into the movie starting back up, I switched the tv back to cable mode and realized the cable was back on. But, I didn't press stop on the DVD player or the remote control before just turning the device off, using the power button on the remote - so the power button on the DVD player was on "Stand-by mode", still pressed in. I know I have done this several times before. Since then the player will not play at all. When turned on the blue DVD screen comes up, but when pressing the "open/eject" button on the DVD player or the remote, the screen turns black and flashes from black to the blue screen. As long as the tray is not open, the blue screen stays on the tv. When trying to play a movie, I place it in the tray correctly, then the tray closes. The screen goes back to black and the movie does not automatically begin to play like it should, and has always done until this issue arose. The DVD display screen shows the "NTSC" and the DVD image, but it does not appear to be "spinning" on the DVD display screen as it should. When trying to eject the DVD, the open/eject button on the player nor the remote will open it. I have to turn the power off, turn it back on, and get the tray to open before the tv screen goes back to black and the player freezes up again. It sounds as if the DVD IS spinning on the inside of the player, but makes a "whirring" type of sound, like it's spinning too slow...? Do you have any idea what this issue could be, and if so can this "malfunction" (hoping that's all it is) be fixed? I know this particular Apex DVD player is pretty old, so if it cannot be fixed, I just contribute it to me not operating it properly, by turning the power off without stopping the movie first, and it's old age. Any information you might be able to give me would be appreciated!

Thanks!
