If I were to immigrate from Syria to another country such as the US or Canada, would I qualify for political asylum? I'd rather ask at the port of entry than at an embassy (since US embassies are closing here and ****). Plus for my own security I'd rather people didn't know the exact reason I'm leaving (Atheist, member of LGBT, liberal and overall enjoy life and death would put a terrible dent on my plans).
And I'm sure some of you have seen recent news.
So, would I qualify as an asylee/refugee? Any suggestions as to what state/province would be cheapest? I have plenty of friends in Cali (which I know is far from cheap, but at least there's a roof over my head if I can't afford a hostel), but I don't know anyone elsewhere on that continent. Also, I heard that once I'm there I'm not allowed to apply for an employment permit for a period of time. Any suggestions for cheap hostels etc?

Yes you would qualify, you would be welcomed in both arms. Be sure to put your claim in for state benefits on the day that you arrive.
If you are applying to enter the USA from another nation you may not use "asylum", you must use "refugee".
"Asylum" is asked for when you are already in the USA.
It would not behoove you to enter the USA illegally and apply for "asylum" here. You would already have a black mark against you to clear up first.
You apply for "refugee" status from your nation of origin.
You can go to the link posted below and find out if you qualify for "refugee" status.
Be forwarned that Syria is a nation which, at this time, is on precarious political ground with the United States, and you will be scrutinized extensively.
If you really are an atheist and LGBT member, then Canada is the best choice for you. Same-sex marriages are recognized across the country, and you can sponsor a same-sex partner for immigration once you obtain citizenship.
