It depends on your pain tolerance. Some of my friends say it hurt, others don't. And the same thing goes for cartilage piercings...although I couldn't even feel mine. But I suggest getting yours done with a needle (although mine was done with a gun) - I've heard that it can shatter your cartilage when pierced with a gun.
you should not base whether you get your nose pierced or not on how much it hurts. It does, however, hurt a lot. I'd say it's a 10 on the pain scale. You should definately be at least 16 to get a piercing. I'm pretty sure cartilage piercings hurt a good bit too.
I don't have the side of my nose pierced, I have my septum pierced (which is the cartilage that runs up the center of the inside of your nose) and it hurt a lot. I've heard the side hurts worse but I don't believe it.

Very little and very temporary. It just made my eye in that side very teary for a couple minutes. It was so worth it though!
it actually stung for a bit, when i had mine done it was nov-2007
it makes ur eyes water.
putting in a bigger nose ring will make your eyes water too.and sting a bit.
