I have a Sony DSLR with a zoom/ macro lens. I am new to photography, do you think macro is appropriate for portraits?
Update:There is a switch on the lens to change it from macro back to normal zoom.

It's not a problem to use it. The lens simply lets you focus very close.
Not if used as a macro lens unless you want your portraits to be a closeup of someone's eyeball.
There's no need for it in any way.
Many *true* macro lenses (and yours isn't one of them) are incredibly sharp, and have a large maximum aperture (f/2.8 or so). That large aperture makes them useful for portraits when you want to blur the background; the "incredibly sharp" part not so much -- they show every skin imperfection :)
Peace.
