I'm 16, in high school, and I live in north Georgia. Just in case that helps you come up with an answer. I'd like to start soon, but if I have to finish school first, that's fine. But how do I do it?

In Ohio, this is how it's usually done.
You finish high school. Then you either go to college for a degree or join an Ohio Police Officer Training Academy (OPOTA). Some police academies require you to be 21. If you go to college for a degree without going to the police academy for dual credit, then you may opt to sit for a larger department's list or go to the OPOTA now.
If you sit for the list, the lists involve a series of tests that can vary from department to department. I have sat for fire department lists and they have involved everything from basic fire knowledge to just basic 8th grade general knowledge to a specialized booklet that you study from. Then they have a physical fitness test followed by interviews, background checks, etc. Sometimes you'll get bonus points on the list for military experience, police academy certificate, previous experience, or a college degree. This will vary from department to department.
Oh, and some departments do not do tests at all.
Your best bet here is to study the job criteria and then comply with whatever it says. This will differ from cop department from cop department.
Good Luck To You!
