Protect myself from a mugger?
One day two muggers came up to my friend and I and stole ours phones. They were 5 years older than us. We were 14. Would owning a butterfly knife and knowing the cool moves imitate a mugger/robber/bully/etc. I know it is illegal but it is just a question.Will a person threatening me back off if I just do some cool moves with it?

Pulling a knife when you are getting mugged is a bad idea for so many reasons but the most important one being that you are escalating the level of violence. If they have a knife but were going to punch you then you have now turned it into a knife fight and they are likely to stab you. After all you are now threatening them and they need to defend themselves. If they didn't have a knife then they could potentially take your knife and use it against you. I was arrested when I was 15 because I was stopped by the police and was carrying a butterfly knife for exactly the same reasons. A bully might back off, or they might not, after all a bully usually knows you and will know whether you are the sort of person who would actually use the knife, a mugger is more likely to see it as a challenge and take the knife off you and use it against you. Personally I keep a pen in my pocket at all times, I wouldn't pull it out and threaten someone, nor would I use it if I didn't think my life was in immediate danger but I could use it to stab someone just as easily as a knife if I really felt I was about to be killed or permanently wounded by an attacker. At the same time no cop will arrest you for carrying a pen. Carrying a knife will not end well, it never does.
Unless you know how to use it and be prepared for the consequences then I still would suggest you don't get one.
It would depend on their body size and the size of their guts to challenge you, they also may carry a bigger knife or carry a gun and just shoot you in self defence
See where nearby whether you can get self defence classes, or look into martial arts schools
First of all forget the butterfly knife. What I have seen of them they look weak. I would go for a sturdy folder. And watching some YouTube videos would probably be a good idea. And remember go for the eyes.
If you "do cool moves" with a knife, expect to be shot.
how about you give them your money and walk away with no risk of getting hurt. i don't think that idea occurs to many people in this weapon crazy nation
