There are all kinds of love. But no, I don't think mutuality is a requirement. I think those are the truest kinds of love. When you love a dog who can't possibly love you back, it is pure, because the relationship isn't based on reciprocity or keeping score. The same goes for the parents of an infant or a very young child who feels a strong bond, but probably isn't mentally or emotionally developed enough to truly love back yet.
However, love IS different from desire. You can desire someone you love, but you can also desire someone you don't.
