Anarchy can be most roughly generalised as an absence of governmental control.
Communism however can be most roughly generalised as a system of popular, decentralised government with aspects such as universal healthcare and a welfare state.
The contradiction, I would say, is that communism is a form of government whereas anarchy is a lack of government. Like Christianity versus atheism.
Marx's claim is that by using brutal merciless force to compel people to act like mindless hive animals, their offspring will ACTUALLY BE mindless hive animals and there will then be no government, per se, as each descendant of what used to be humans will automatically do whatsoever the collective requires of it.
BUT:
To think this is a valid theory, one HAS TO accept "inheritance of acquired traits" (for example, that amputees produce limbless children) and other than a few of the population's most profoundly retarded, NO ONE has EVER believed that. Still IT IS the STATED basis of Marxist theory. Therefore we KNOW with irrefutable certainty that unless Marx and all of his supporters over the ages are DROOLING IDIOTS, that the "period" of central control by force is in fact the END GOAL of "Communism."
Communism generally involves a strong central government coercing people at every turn. Sounds like liberalism, doesn't it? It is the opposite of anarchy.
People are confused. Communism is a form of anarchy where there is no private property. The USSR was never Communist. Because they were governed by a Communist party, uneducated people think that was communism. Anarcho-communism is not a contradiction, but a redundancy, as communism is anarchy, by definition.

anarchy means no one controlls anything. Communisim needs control of everything in order to share the wealth.
Not necessarily a contradiction. More of a fantasy.

In dishonest "theory," it isn't.

Jerry pretty much has helped you here,
